Chapter Twenty
New Digs. New Threats.
We scoured the building, looking for all possible points of entry. There were only two on the ground floor: the shop entrance and the loading dock at the back. Both had metal shutters. The latter benefitted from a heavy sliding door as well. We still didnât know what the third monster kind was, but from what we had seen, it would require a creature with at least an eliteâs power to penetrate the building. I wanted to believe that they didnât stray far from their nests, but hoping for the best in the new world would be foolish.
We hit the jackpot with the basement. It had phone chargers, batteries, cheap electric shavers, and all manner of cleaning supplies. Meanwhile, the first floor turned out to be a storage for dry goods: rice, pasta, flour, pulses, and tinned fruit and veg. It had an office too, with a computer, printer, and laptop. It appeared to be a complete messâhalf-full teacups and open packets of crisps lying around. The inhabitants had probably left in a hurry.
Kitty was ecstatic when we got to the second floor. The ownersâor their employeesâhad lived above their store. The two-bedroom apartment had running water in the kitchen and bathroom. None of us complained when she claimed the room with a single bed. Pink paint covered the walls, and the former occupant had decorated with dozens of plush toys. Pallav and Rajesh argued over the bedroom. Liam didnât care, and I made a makeshift bed for myself in the basement where I had easy access to a plethora of crafting materials.
The best part of our new home was the roof. It was flat and perfect for a lookout. Liam sent his gun drone up there to monitor the surroundings. Its developing AI would do a decent job of keeping watch. The Recon Drone went out scouting with Rajesh, and the rat golem followed. They all headed off in different directions with the same purpose: pinpointing the closest nests.
Pallav, Liam, and I worked on securing the building. Even though the ground floor was well defended, the higher ones had too many weak points. First of all, none of the windows were barred. If the local rats or the third monster type knew how to climb walls, weâd be in big trouble. Kitty covered them in duct tape, while Pallav and I took apart all the shelves in the building. Then we nailed them across all the windows, ensuring no light would get through and intruders would need to work hard for access.
Next, we rearranged the furniture around the front entrance, stacking everything up to the ceiling. It would funnel intruders to an open space in the center of the shop. Beyond it, we set up barricades. Liam and I could use them as cover and shoot down hostiles from safety. Due to the loading dockâs multiple layers of protection, we opted for a different approach.
